Extra Dry Martini
Bombay Sapphire Gin is a delicately flavoured spirit that is perfect for martinis, but other London dry gins, such as Gordon's are also good for making dry martinis.

1 1/2 oz   gin
1   drop dry vermouth
1   green olive
1   twist of lemon peel, optional

1 Fill a mixing glass with ice. Pour in gin and dry vermouth. Stir and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with an olive.
2 There are, of course, many ways to make a martini. Most connoisseurs agree that only a dash of vermouth is neccessary, but few can agree on what a dash actually means. Some add a drop of lemon or lime juice to the mix, others add a sliver of lemon zest into the glass. Some people prefer olives, whilst still others prefer the pungency of a cocktail onion.
3 Ian Fleming's James Bond chose vodka over gin for his cocktail and chose to have it shaken, not stirred. This results in a slight watering down of the ingredients and breaks up the smoothness of the drink. It does, however, ensure a colder mix.
4 There are no real rules, although most would agree on using ice cold spirit (gin can be placed in the freezer, but vermouth cannot), and using only a miniscule amount of dry vermouth (certainly no more than 1/8th of the drink- some would suggest 1/13th whilst other drinkers simply stir the vermouth with the ice, before throwing the liquid away, claiming that enough vermouth clings onto the ice to ensure a perfect mix).
